The Diamondbacks have four games remaining on the schedule. While they currently hold position for the final Wild Card game, they are tied with the Braves in the loss column with 71 apiece. While Arizona will likely complete the final four games of the season on time, the Mets and the Braves won’t. Hurricane Helene, currently moving up towards the west coast of Florida in the Gulf of Mexico, will bring flooding rains to the Atlanta area and has caused the final two games of the Braves vs. Mets series to be postponed.

As a result of the two games being postponed, and the likely playoff implications of that, the two games will be made up in a doubleheader on Monday. The only way the Diamondbacks can ensure they aren’t nervously watching that doubleheader is to take care of the business in front of them. Manager Torey Lovullo was asked about that in his pregame media session Wednesday, with video courtesy of Arizona Sports beat writer Alex Weiner.

They still control their playoff destiny, needing a combination of just four wins and losses by both the Braves and Mets to clinch a playoff spot. Going 4-0 would cement their postseason chances, as there is no scenario in which the three teams can finish at 91 wins, with the doubleheader deciding the final team and seeding. The Diamondbacks do not have any of the tiebreakers in either scenario, which is an additional problem due to not taking care of business earlier in the season.

After blowing an 8-0 lead on Sunday, Arizona has turned in back-to-back poor showings against the Giants. They will get one turn through the rotation left with their best pitchers, with Thursday’s off day allowing them to maneuver their rotation toward the end of the season. The Diamondbacks should opt to go with the four pitchers they plan to ride with in the postseason as their remaining starters. Zac Gallen will get first crack against the Giants on Wednesday, while Merrill Kelly and Eduardo Rodríguez will likely appear in the San Diego series.
