Marte was joined by National League manager Torey Lovullo, who joked about “insider trading” when placing Marte in the leadoff spot. Lovullo sported special shoes that read “snakes alive,” a term coined by the Diamondbacks during their run to the World Series last fall.

As they prepared for the first pitch, Lovullo met with National League starting pitcher Paul Skenes. Skenes, who will only be pitching the first inning, has tied a new MLB record by attending an All-Star game after just 11 games.
Lovullo told Skenes, “The decision was easy. The decision was a slam dunk for me.”

With Skenes pitching the first inning, he will face Steven Kwan, Gunnar Henderson, and Juan Soto. If a batter manages to reach base, Skenes could face Aaron Judge, who is batting fourth in the American League lineup.
