On Friday, Lovullo dropped a hint as to who he would consider to start the All-Star Game. It comes as no surprise given the amount of interest Skenes has generated in the game as a generational pitching phenom who has more than lived up to the hype. Just a year ago, he was selected No. 1 overall by the Pittsburgh Pirates and has quickly become the ace of their rotation.
“He’s come on very quickly,” said Lovullo on Friday. “He’s been an unbelievable addition to Major League Baseball, and he’s created a lot of interest in Major League Baseball. I’m going to be situationally aware of that when I’m making this decision.”
When Lovullo informed Skenes of the news, the right-hander was taken aback but thanked Lovullo for the honor.
“So well-deserved and we’re super excited to make this announcement,” Lovullo told Skenes on the Dan Patrick Show. “You represent so many great things this game craves. It’s such a great story. The way you’ve come on the scene, the way you’ve done it with such humbleness, it’s noticeable. I’ll be honored to be your manager, I’m going to be honored to watch you throw your first pitch.”
The 2024 MLB All-Star Game will take place at Globe Life Field on Tuesday, July 16 at 5:00 P.M. MST.
