Diamondbacks pitching got hammered in a 10-3 loss to the San Diego Padres. San Diego scored two runs in the first off Brandon Pfaadt and never looked back. Padres hitters hammered Arizona’s pitching staff for 10 runs and 14 hits, including five extra-base hits and three home runs.
Thank you for reading this post, don't forget to subscribe! It was a rough night for Brandon Pfaadt, who served up back-to-back home runs to Fernando Tatis Jr. and Jurickson Profar in the first. He was able to settle down and keep it a 2-0 game through the first three innings. However, the floodgates opened in the fourth off the right-hander. Ha-Seong Kim lined a two-out, two-strike single up the middle, and then Luis Campusano lined a single that bounced off Jake McCarthy’s glove while attempting a potential game-saving catch. Instead, the ball caromed to center, allowing Kim to score. Kim would later add a two-run homer off Pfaadt in the sixth inning to close out his start. Pfaadt allowed five runs on nine hits, three being home runs, in 5 1/3 innings.
Offensively, the Diamondbacks had a chance to score some early runs off Padres starter Michael King. King allowed two baserunners in each of the first three innings, but Arizona was unable to capitalize. Collectively, they went 0-for-5 with runners in scoring position and stranded all six runners. They did not score until King left the game after five scoreless innings.
Despite trailing 5-0 after six innings, they mounted a small rally in the seventh to creep closer. A one-out walk by Corbin Carroll, his second of the game, preceded back-to-back home runs from Ketel Marte and Lourdes Gurriel Jr. to cut the deficit to 5-3. A single by Jake McCarthy brought the potential tying run to the plate with the red-hot Pavin Smith up at the plate, but Smith struck out to end the inning and the Diamondbacks’ last offensive threat for the game.
Any chance the Diamondbacks had of mounting a comeback completely evaporated in the eighth inning. Humberto Castellanos, in his third inning of relief, saw the wheels come off. Two singles and a walk opened up the frame, extending San Diego’s lead. The Padres loaded the bases with one out for Profar, who cleared the bases with a double down the right field line. By the time the inning ended, San Diego had a 10-3 lead.
The Diamondbacks return to Petco Park to play the Padres in the third game of this four-game series. Ryne Nelson (3-4, 5.44 ERA) takes the ball for Arizona while knuckleballer Matt Waldron (3-5, 3.98 ERA) will start for San Diego. Both of these pitchers faced each other on May 5, when the Diamondbacks beat the Padres 11-4 at Chase Field. First pitch will be at 5:40 P.M. MST.
