On X (formerly Twitter), the D-backs announced that starting pitcher Jordan Montgomery and outfielder Pavin Smith were both recalled from Triple-A Reno. As corresponding moves, Ryne Nelson was placed on the 15-day injured list after suffering a right elbow contusion Thursday night and shortstop Jace Peterson was designated for assignment.

On Monday, manager Torey Lovullo had Montgomery scheduled for tonight’s start against the Giants and after a short stint in Reno to begin the season, he is ready to make his Diamondbacks debut. With the Aces, the 31-year-old started two games, recording a 10.57 ERA and nine strikeouts in 7.2 innings.

During the offseason, Montgomery signed a one-year, $25 million contract with Arizona that has a vesting player option for a second year. The South Carolina native started in the minors for a rehab assignment before this recall.

Like Montgomery, Smith is back up in the majors after starting the year on the Aces.

Prior to this season, Smith played 301 games with Arizona. He has batted 233-for-971 (.240), notching 116 RBIs and 28 home runs through four seasons (2020-24) in the MLB.

To make room for Montgomery on the roster, Nelson lands on the IL after Giants’ Mike Yastrzemski hit a comebacker directly at Nelson’s right arm in the second inning on Thursday and did not return. After further examination, the team reported that he left the game due to a right elbow contusion.

As for Peterson, he has struggled offensively as he was just 1-for-22 (.045) at the plate this season. The 10-year MLB veteran is now removed from the team’s 40-man roster and the Diamondbacks will have to either bring back Peterson to the MLB roster, place him on waivers, trade him, release him, or send him down to the minors.

The Diamondbacks face the San Francisco Giants tonight at 7:15 p.m. PT inside Oracle Park.
