Black Excellence
These jerseys have a much deeper-rooted meaning that ASU’s Black African Coalition’s Community Liaison Intern Heba Saad spoke about.
“Black excellence entails being part of a community of creative, ambitious, caring, and powerful people who work together to move mountains,” Saad said. “It includes all the diverse cultures that encompass our communities, cultures that we do not dilute and have never diluted our brilliance.”
Inspired by Marcus Garvey, a Jamaican-born Political Activist in the early 1990s, the jerseys reflect some of his ideas.
Garvey developed the term “Cream of the Planet” with cream symbolizing the abundance of natural resources that Africa provides. With this, the Black Excellence jerseys utilize a primary cream color as a way to mirror Garvey’s messages.
“Black excellence represents to me the brilliance that is embedded within despite the disparities,” the coalition’s Treasurer Melona Medhane added.
