The question is what is next for Benavidez?

Saul “Canelo” Alvarez

A fight against the biggest star in boxing Saul “Canelo” Alvarez is the number one option with a bullet. Canelo has been on record saying that he wanted the fighters who were calling him out to fight against each other. Benavidez defeated Caleb Plant and Demetrius Andrade in his last two bouts.

Plant was a former champion who lost his belt to Canelo. Andrade was one of the fighters who was calling out Canelo for a long time. Benavidez took care of his part of the “deal” and now it sets up for a mega fight in May between Canelo and Benavidez.

Benavidez has earned the right to fight for the undisputed super middleweight crown. If Canelo decides to fight someone else who can Benavidez fight?

Jaime Munguia

Jaime Munguia is 42-0. The number two ranked contender in the WBC Super Middleweight rankings and number one in the WBO rankings. Munguia is a high octane fighter who always has exciting fights. If Canelo is not on the table this is a great substitute for fight fans as Munguia and Benavidez are a match made in heaven for an exciting fight.

David Morrell

David Morrell is only 9-0 but came into professional boxing with a vast amateur boxing background that put him on a fast track in the 168-pound division. Morrell is the number four ranked contender by Ring magazine. Morrell has eight knockouts. This would be an interesting fight as well but it wouldn’t be the money maker of the other two options.

There is a clear number one option here. David Benavidez should be fighting Canelo Alvarez next. If Canelo chooses a different opponent, the boxing world will look at Canelo in a different light and it won’t be positive.
