Offensive Explosion Late in First Half Gives ASU a Halftime Lead

We were headed towards another defensive battle. Early in the second quarter, it was 7-7. Multiple punts in a row, and no team could get anything going. However, an Arizona State touchdown with 7:14 left in the half contributed to four straight TD drives to end the half. This ended with USC’s Cameron Ward throwing a TD pass to Lincoln Victor with 42 seconds left in the half to tie the game at 21. Arizona State got a last-second field goal to take the lead.

Washington State scored on the opening drive with a Cameron Ward rushing touchdown, then DeCarlos Brooks immediately answered with a rushing TD of his own. That was all the scoring for the next 12 minutes of game time.

Then they started the run. DeCarlos Brooks got his second touchdown on a 1-yard scamper to give ASU a 14-7 lead. That lasted three minutes as Cameron Ward got his second touchdown with an 11-yard rush to tie it at 14.

Arizona State got the ball back and their longest season run as Cam Skattebo took in 66 yards to the 9. He would finish off that drive with a touchdown run of two yards.

When it looked like ASU would take a lead into halftime, Cameron Ward drove down the field and scored a touchdown with that pass to Victor. They tied it at 21.

It was not over yet, as ASU drove down the field, and Dario Longhetto kicked a 51-yard field goal to take the lead. 24-21.

Trenton Bourguet has 135 passing yards, while Cameron Ward has 186. Skattebo has 93 rushing yards, but Washington State hasn’t run the ball well, with 42 total rushing yards.

Elijah Badger is the Sun Devils leading receiver with 40 yards. Washington State’s Kyle Williams has 64.

The second half will be about who can get the stops needed to hold off the shootout.
