Already down 2-1 in the NLCS, the Arizona Diamondbacks found themselves in danger of dropping another game to the Phillies as they trailed 5-3 in the 8th inning of Game 4.
Thank you for reading this post, don't forget to subscribe! The inning began with a spark as Lourdes Gurriel Jr. broke out of his postseason slump by launching a rocket down the third-base line for a double.
This brought up veteran Evan Longoria to the plate as the tying run and zero outs.
Meanwhile, Diamondbacks manager Torey Lovullo had Jordan Lawlar waiting in the on-deck circle, intending to have him bunt Gurriel over to third.
However, things took a different turn when Evan Longoria smashed a line drive to left field, which was caught for an out.
All of a sudden, with Gurriel standing on second base with one out, a bunt would not have done the Diamondbacks much good.
Which caused Lovullo to switch from the rookie Jordan Lawlar and hand the bat over to Alek Thomas.
The result? A historic home run.
On the sixth pitch of the at-bat, Alek Thomas blasted a ball into the right-field bleachers, leveling the game at 5-5.
This electrifying turn of events marked a turning point in the series, leading the Diamondbacks to a win in Game 4
