Diamondbacks take Game 3 in dramatic fashion

Arizona Diamondbacks second baseman Ketel Marte (4) celebrates after hitting a double during the sixth inning against the Philadelphia Phillies in game three of the NLCS of the 2023 MLB playoffs at Chase Field in Phoenix on Oct. 19, 2023.

For the first time since their 2001 World Series Championship run, the Arizona Diamondbacks have won a game in the NLCS as they took down the Phillies in front of the home crowd at Chase Field.

After allowing 10 runs against Philadelphia just two days ago, the Diamondbacks pitching staff bounced back with a brilliant full nine innings against a scorching hot offense.

And it started with a historical start from their rookie, Brandon Pffadt.

With perhaps the season on the line, Pfaadt provided 5.1 shutout innings where he allowed just two hits and struck out a whopping nine batters.

These nine strikeouts broke a career high for the 25-year-old.

After Pfaadt was controversially pulled in the 6th inning, the Diamondbacks bullpen stepped up to the occasion and continued what Pfaadt started.

But pitching can only get so far, and for Arizona, offense has not been something that has come easy so far this series.

That is, unless you are Ketel Marte.

Just like Luis Gonzales in 2001, Ketel Marte picked up his third hit of the afternoon with a walk-off base hit up the middle.

It was a constant struggle all game for the Diamondbacks to convert with runners in scoring position, and, for a second, it seemed like this trend would continue in the bottom of the ninth.

However, Ketel Marte had other plans.

Next up for the Diamondbacks is a chance to tie the series at two games tomorrow at 5:07 PM.
