Diamondbacks score three runs in the third as Pfaadt shuts out White Sox

Corbin Carroll hit a 2-run double in the third as the Diamondbacks shut out the White Sox 3-0. This, combined with a Cubs and Marlins loss, drops the D’backs magic number to two.

Carroll entered the 3rd inning, having struck out in his first at-bat. White Sox starter Luis Patino had pitched a perfect two innings. However, he had allowed a Jace Peterson single and a Geraldo Perdomo walk to start the 3rd inning. Carroll came up and hit a double to right center. Peterson and Perdomo made it home to give the D’backs a 2-0 lead. Tommy Pham would single in Carroll. That would be all the Diamondbacks would get for the rest of the game. But that was all they needed.

Brandon Pfaadt was strong tonight. He pitched 5.2 scoreless innings and had eight strikeouts with no walks. Pfaadt got out of a jam in the third when he got Elvis Andrus to fly out with only one out and guys on first and second. Then, Andrew Benintendi struck out to eliminate the threat. He was eventually pulled with a man on second for Luis Frias to face Carlos Perez and got him to fly out.

The White Sox only got one other runner in scoring position the rest of the night when Lenyn Sosa hit a double off Paul Sewald in the 9th. However, Sewald struck out the pinch-hitting Tyler Naquin with two outs to end the game and help the Diamondbacks complete the shutout of the White Sox.

NL Wild Card Race

The Braves would pull off another comeback on the Cubs in Atlanta. Ozzie Albies hit a walk-off single in the 10th inning to bring home Ronald Acuna Jr.

The Mets blew out the Marlins 11-2 in game one of the doubleheader. They then pulled two runs in the top of the 9th to win the second game 4-2.

The D’backs can clinch the postseason as early as Friday.
