Cardinals’ HC Jonathan Gannon calls Kyler Murray a franchise quarterback

Arizona Cardinals quarterback Kyler Murray and head coach Jonathan Gannon during training camp at State Farm Stadium in Glendale on July 27, 2023.

During the announcement of the team captains, HC Jonathan Gannon made a point to address and dispel any rumors concerning Kyler Murray’s potential absence this season.

Not only did the Cardinals HC name Murray a team captain, but he also recognized Murray as the Cardinals franchise quarterback, per Kyle Odegard.

While the temptation of Caleb Williams is undeniable, the Cardinals are not prepared to part ways with Kyler Murray just yet.

After all, Murray was the team’s #1 overall pick just four years ago, and since then, he has earned the title of Offensive Rookie of the Year and has been selected to two Pro Bowls.

Because of these accolades, the Cardinals awarded K1 with a $250.5 million contract extension ahead of the 2022 season.

Now, with a new head coach and offensive coordinator in place, Murray has a valuable opportunity to reset and demonstrate exactly why he was chosen as the #1 overall pick in the 2019 Draft.

And, if things don’t work out, the Cardinals will have two high draft picks waiting for them in 2024.
