On Thursday (8/24) the Arizona Diamondbacks will play host to the Cincinatti Reds in maybe the most impactful series of the year. Diamondbacks and the Reds are both in contention for a wildcard spot. The Diamondbacks hold that third spot as of right now, with the Reds trailing by half a game.

The Diamondbacks are red hot right now. Recently Arizona swept the Texas Rangers in a two game set and have won their last four ball games. Over the last 10 games the Diamondbacks are 8-2.

The Diamondbacks are turning to Merrill Kelly to start game one of the series. Kelly has been a formidable starter for the team. Kelly has stamped himself as the Diamondbacks clear number two guy in the rotation. On the season Kelly has struck out 134 hitters, has a 10-5 record on a 3.13 ERA (top 10 in the MLB).

The Diamondbacks bullpen has been getting a ton of support from their guys in the field. Not only defensively but at the plate as well. Over their last eight games the club has scored more than four runs six times. A big factor in the offensive outburst has been veteran outfielder Tommy Pham who is currently riding a 13-game hit streak.

Before the season started, neither of the Wildcard competitors even cracked the top 20 in the power rankings. The Diamondbacks came in at #21 and TheRinger.com stated, “the Diamondbacks probably won’t make the playoffs.” The Cincinatti Reds were ranked at #25 and their roster was called not enticing.

We all love a good underdog story, and this four-game clash in certainly one of them.
