Merrill Kelly reinstated from 15-day IL to pitch against Cardinals

The Arizona Diamondbacks have reinstated SP Merrill Kelly from the 15-day IL to pitch against the St. Louis Cardinals on Tuesday.

Kelly has not pitched in a game since June 24th. In this start, the 34-year-old right-hander struggled as he allowed seven runs in five innings. This resulted in a 7-6 loss to the Giants.

But when looking at the bigger picture, Merrill Kelly has played one of the most important roles in the Diamondbacks success this season.

Without Kelly, the D-backs were left with just three rookies and Zac Gallen in their rotation. During the time that Kelly was on the IL, Arizona posted a record of 8-16.

This year, Kelly holds a 9-4 record along with a 3.22 ERA through 16 starts.

Along with reinstating Kelly from the IL, the Diamondbacks have designated reliever Jose Ruiz for assignment. Arizona’s 40-man roster now sits at 39.

Jose Ruiz was traded to the Diamondbacks from the White Sox back in April. Unfortunately, his season ERA has recently skyrocketed up to 5.89 after the Diamondbacks turned toward Ruiz to start against the Reds on Sunday.

The D-backs are looking to snap a five-game losing streak with Merrill Kelly back on the mound tonight at Chase Field. First pitch is scheduled for 6:40 PM.
