Arizona Diamondbacks reinstate C Carson Kelly from 60-day IL

Ahead of their four-game home series against the Philadelphia Phillies, the Diamondbacks made a handful of roster moves, including reinstating catcher Carson Kelly from the 60-day IL.

Kelly has played the past four seasons of his career with the Diamondbacks, but he has yet to take the field this year due to a right forearm fracture.

In 2022, the 28-year-old played in 104 games, almost beating a career high. During those 104 games, Kelly recorded a .211 batting average and a .617 OPS.

Carson Kelly will make his first start on the season tonight against the Phillies with rookie Tommy Henry on the mound.

As a result of this transaction, Arizona sent down catcher Jose Herrera, who has seen his playing time drastically dissipate over the past few months. Herrera has played in just 11 games since the end of April. He has gone 7/28 at the plate in this span.

Additionally, the D-backs will get back arguably their best reliever, as Joe Mantiply has been lifted from the 15-day IL. Mantiply finished last season with a 2.85 ERA and started off his 2023 campaign on the right foot before leaving for the IL due to a strained right hamstring.

Mantiply will replace RHP Kevin Ginkel, who was optioned to Triple-A Reno. which, to many, was quite a surprise considering the improvement the Diamondbacks have seen from Ginkel since April.

After starting the season in a slump, Ginkel has settled down nicely, bringing his ERA down to 2.76 and recording four straight scoreless outings.

First pitch for the Diamondbacks series opener against the Phillies will be at 6:40 back in Arizona. The D-backs look to bring their winning streak to six games and extend their NL West lead over the Dodgers.
