The Phoenix Mercury’s playoff push just took a massive blow. According to a team statement, guard Diana Taurasi will miss the remainder off the season with a quad injury.

Taurasi’s injury couldn’t of come at a worse time for the Mercury. Phoenix is currently in 8th place of the playoff race. They lead the New York Liberty by only half a game.

Both Taurasi and Skylar Diggins-Smith have proven to be a disciplined one-two punch in the second half of the season. The duo’s efforts gave much of the Mercury fanbase a bit of hope at a playoff appearance.

Taurasi appeared in 31 games this season. The 40-year-old averaged 16.7 points, 3.4 rebounds and 3.8 assists per game.

While spectators alike assumed that Taurasi’s career could’ve been coming to an end soon, the future Hall-of-Famer put those concerns to bed as she turned in a decent showing this season.

The Mercury have had quite a roller coaster- like season. Even throughout some glorious glimpses, their highlights have been overshadowed by faulty teammate chemistry and somewhat questionable styles of play at times — mostly spearheaded by Taurasi.

The Mercury were able to hold off the Liberty on Saturday without Diggins-Smith or Taurasi. Still, their hopes of making a serious playoff push just plummeted without Taurasi.
