PHOENIX – The Arizona Diamondbacks wrapped up their six-game homestand with an 8–3 loss to the San Diego Padres on Sunday at Chase Field, once again haunted by pitching problems that showed up late.

Merrill Kelly was only able to pitch five innings while giving up four earned runs on seven hits. Kelly has been very reliable this season, though he was unable to get through Sunday in his usual fashion.

Eugenio Suárez made his mark again when he hit a two-run home run in the bottom of the fifth inning. Suárez is making a case for an all-star bid with how he is proving his power at the plate.

This D-Backs bullpen put them even deeper behind late in the game as Tayler Scott and Anthony DeSclafani gave up a combined four earned runs on six hits. It was DeSclafani’s Diamondbacks debut on Sunday, although it didn’t go as planned as the Snakes still cannot find an answer to their late-game pitching problems.

After what has been a tough stretch in May, Arizona has seemingly turned a new page in the month of July. This past week has been one of the highlights of the season as they went 5-1 on this recent six-game homestand. The Diamondbacks move to 36-35 on the season and will look to get back to their winning ways against the Toronto Blue Jays.
