After former Sun Devil right-handed pitcher Thomas Burns announced that he decided to transfer to Texas on July 1, another ASU baseball player has made the exact same switch in under a week.

On X (formerly Twitter), infielder Ethan Mendoza announced that he is returning to his home state of Texas and has committed to the Longhorns ahead of his sophomore year.

“Coming home,” Mendoza said on X with a picture of him in a Texas uniform.

Mendoza originally committed to ASU following him graduating from Southlake Carroll (Tex.) High School. He was the No. 164 high school prospect in the nation and No. 34 shortstop according to Prep Baseball Report in 2023 before his freshman year at ASU this past season.

The 5-foot-10, 175-pound infielder quickly became integral for Arizona State as he boasted with a .315 AVG, three home runs and 24 RBIs in 53 games (49 starts). He had a 17-game hitting streak before it was broken in the final game of the season, a 3-2 loss to Oregon State in the Pac-12 tournament.

Now that Mendoza is leaving Tempe and heading to Texas along with Burns, the Longhorns’ new head coach Jim Schlossnagle has added yet another talented player to his new squad. Before Schlossnagle got the job, he coached Texas A&M who beat Arizona State both times last year, guiding them to a 4-0 win on March 1 and a 10-5 victory on March 3.

The Longhorns ended last season going 36-24 overall and 20-10 in the Big 12. Texas is one of the newest members of the SEC after leaving the Big 12.
