Bliss, 24, was originally a second round selection by the Diamondbacks, taken 42nd overall, out of Auburn University in the 2021 MLB Draft. The glove is the main carrying tool, especially at second base, but he has a quick and powerful stroke that allows him to crush mistakes. He projects to be a solid regular at second, with enough bat to keep his glove in the lineup. He is also an aggressive baserunner who will push the envelope on the bases, with 127 career steals in 327 minor league games.
After a rough first season in the organization in 2022, a year where he started in a deep slump then finished strong, he got off to a hot start in 2023 and didn’t look back. Between the Diamondbacks and Mariners organizations, he hit .304 with 23 home runs and 55 stolen bases.
He was one of three players traded to Arizona for Paul Sewald, along with infielder Josh Rojas and outfielder Dominic Canzone. Sewald has been exactly what the Diamondbacks have needed for their bullpen, a lockdown closer who has stabilized the ninth inning and allowed other relievers to settle into more comfortable roles. He’s had a similar effect, as the team is 10-8 since he was activated from the injured list.
