PHOENIX – Needing a big response against the Portland Trail Blazers, the Phoenix Suns delivered the opposite and received another reminder of just how much work remains. The Suns were taken down by Portland by a score of 132-119 on Wednesday, but this loss highlights the struggles so far this season.

After being embarrassed 124-83 in their season opener, Phoenix had an opportunity to get revenge on its home floor. However, even with Ja Morant unavailable for Portland, the Suns struggled to find answers defensively, dropping to 1-5 on the season. There were some positives. Devin Booker looked comfortable offensively by shooting 9-for-19 for 33 points, showing the scoring ability and leadership Phoenix needs from its franchise cornerstone. The Suns also found ways to compete on the glass.

Unfortunately, those positives couldn’t overcome a defense that continues to look disconnected. Portland consistently found opportunities inside, physically challenging Phoenix around the basket while creating open looks from beyond the three-point line. The Suns struggled to protect the paint, close out on shooters, and establish any defensive consistency. That’s becoming a troubling pattern. Phoenix entered the season hoping its revamped roster could develop into a cohesive group capable of competing in a difficult Western Conference. Instead, the chemistry and identity that should be developing are taking hits with every disappointing performance. The biggest concern isn’t simply losing to Portland; it’s how familiar the problems look.

A team can survive inconsistent shooting nights or offensive struggles. Surviving defensive breakdowns on a nightly basis is considerably more difficult. At 1-5, Phoenix doesn’t need another offensive adjustment nearly as much as it needs accountability and defensive commitment. The Suns still have time to change their trajectory, but the urgency is growing. If they cannot establish a defensive identity soon, their early-season struggles could become much bigger than a rough opening stretch.
