The Diamondbacks split the series against the San Diego Padres on Sunday to close out the Mexico City series, taking a 12-7 win over the Friars.

Vargas finished a single shy of the cycle, going 3-for-5 and collecting multiple extra-base hits that fueled the D-Backs after falling behind 6-0 early in the matchup. The showing added to a growing list of late-inning and momentum-shifting moments for the Arizona infielder, an element that has become increasingly valuable for the club, with fans continuing to show their appreciation.

The surge is nothing new. His 23-game hitting streak dates to last season, and in the 20 games Vargas has played this year, he has recorded a hit in every one. Vargas leads the team in home runs (6), RBIs (20), hits (29) and OPS (1.104), reflecting a player not just putting the bat on the ball but delivering when the team needs it most.

This stretch has been particularly important for the Diamondbacks, as a few of their well-known big bats have struggled to produce consistent performances in the early stages of the season. While there is still time for them to find their rhythm, Vargas serving as the offensive engine in the meantime has helped keep the club above water.

Fans have always supported players who put in the work and do their part to help the team win. Now, some are not just viewing Vargas as the hottest hitter on the team, but as a player performing at an MVP-caliber level.

The Diamondbacks’ 12-run game was a collective effort, but Vargas’ near cycle was a focal point for fans to celebrate. As the team heads to Milwaukee to take on the Brewers this week, the hope is that his role as a catalyst continues.
