LOS ANGELES — Arizona Diamondbacks first baseman Pavin Smith was scratched from the lineup on Thursday with elbow soreness, which could put him out of action depending on the severity.

Smith, who was originally set to serve as the designated hitter against the Los Angeles Dodgers on Opening Day, felt discomfort as he went through his normal routine. According to MLB.com’s Steve Gilbert, the first baseman said it reached a point where it was uncomfortable to swing a bat.
Smith said he would likely get an MRI on his elbow on Friday morning.

While the severity of the soreness is still unknown, it’s clear the Diamondbacks are taking a cautious approach rather than letting the issue worsen. Losing a platoon player as the season begins isn’t ideal, but addressing a potential soft-tissue injury early could help avoid more serious problems down the road.
Smith has been an important left-handed bat for Arizona, filling multiple roles with the team. Any absence — even short-term — could significantly impact how the lineup is constructed. With the D-Backs still on the road against the Dodgers, that depth will be tested.
