One night after surpassing 3,000 career G League points, Shackelford scored a career-high 54 points against the Mexico City Capitanes on Wednesday — capping a remarkable back-to-back stretch that has showcased his evolution as a scorer and leader.
The outburst followed a 26-point game the night before against Mexico City, where Shackelford continued to carry the offensive load for the Valley. Shackelford averaged 14.1 points, 3.8 rebounds and 3.7 assists per game, continuing a steady offensive presence while expanding his playmaking ability. His recent stretches have shown a late-season leap beyond those season averages.

However, when asked which area he felt he had grown the most in this year, he didn’t point to his scoring abilities.
“I think I was forced to be a leader this year a little more,” Shackelford said after Tuesday’s milestone performance. “Something I kind of envisioned for myself this year… Just leading these guys with it being my fourth season, I think that was a pretty big emphasis for me.”
Valley head coach Paul Jesperson also agreed with that sentiment, pointing to his success around the G League as a reason for an increased leadership role this year.

“He kind of upped his leadership role on top of having to do a lot of extra things as far as scoring,” said Jesperson postgame on Tuesday. “He’s done more playmaking for us this year. So super excited for him, that’s a big accomplishment. He should feel a lot of gratitude that he’s in that situation, and that’s a lot of hard work that he’s been super consistent with for the past three years now. So for him to get that 3K benchmark is awesome.”
For a Valley team that navigated through a tough season — including missing the playoffs — Shackelford’s emergence provided stability. His 3,000 points and increased presence among his teammates place him among the league’s most closely watched players.
