According to a report by ESPN’s Adam Schefter, Cardinals offensive coordinator Drew Petzing is being targeted by the Detroit Lions, who are working to finalize a deal to bring him to Michigan for the same role.

Petzing has been with Arizona for three seasons, serving as a key architect of the offense. His departure would mark another transition point for an organization that entrusted him with reshaping the unit during a period defined by injuries, roster turnover and the integration of young players.

Detroit’s interest in Petzing speaks to how his work is viewed around the league. Under head coach Dan Campbell, the Lions have emerged as a consistent contender in recent seasons and are looking to continue strengthening their coaching staff. Despite missing the playoffs this year, Detroit remains focused on sustaining its offensive identity, and Petzing is seen as a piece that could help round out that vision.

For Arizona, the loss of another top assistant is part of a broader offseason of change. After a 3-14 season under head coach Jonathan Gannon and with ongoing questions surrounding quarterback Kyler Murray’s future, the move could signal a deeper organizational reset.

The Cardinals are leaning toward a rebuild, though progress may not come as quickly as hoped. The NFL is in constant evolution, and much like Petzing, coaches and staff members can come and go with little warning.

While it remains unclear who would replace Petzing, his departure underscores the uncertainty surrounding what the 2026 Cardinals will ultimately look like.
