Facing the Toronto Blue Jays in Game 5 of the American League Championship Series, tied 2-2 in the bottom of the eighth inning, Suárez faced a bases-loaded and no-outs situation. Blue Jays pitcher Seranthony Domínguez threw Suárez a 98 mph fastball as the third baseman connected for an opposite-field grand slam.
Suárez’s grand slam paved the way for the Mariners to take Game 5, 6-2, putting Seattle one win away from reaching its first World Series in franchise history.
It was the first postseason grand slam by a Mariners player since Edgar Martinez hit one in 1995.

For Diamondbacks fans watching from afar, it was a bittersweet moment. A player known for his infectious energy during the season and a half he spent in the desert was now creating October magic, but for another team.
Suárez connected with Arizona fans during his brief stint with the team, earning a loyal following that has followed him into playoff baseball. Even with “Seattle” across his chest, D-backs fans couldn’t help but cheer for the former Diamondback and feel a sense of pride.

Happy for Geno and Naylor, but always a little sad thinking what this season could have been for the Diamondbacks if they had been able to stay healthy… pic.twitter.com/1JTFeKR2No

And if I said I’m actually sobbing at this, even as just a Diamondbacks fan, what then? https://t.co/R6370RtWeW

The grand slam carried emotions beyond numbers. For Seattle, it gave the city something to keep believing in. After back-to-back losses in tough fashion, Suárez’s game-winning hit reenergized Mariners fans, reminding them that their team is now one step closer to making history.
For Diamondbacks fans, it was a reminder of his time in Arizona, especially earlier this season. It might not have been the ending they wanted, but seeing a former Snake deliver the kind of moment they always knew he was capable of brought plenty of joy.

As the Mariners head to Toronto for Game 6 and possibly Game 7, with a chance to reach the World Series, Diamondbacks fans will continue to watch and cheer for one who was once their own.
Suárez isn’t a D-back anymore, but part of that swing still belongs to Arizona. Diamondbacks fans won’t forget it, just as Mariners fans won’t anytime soon.
