Merrill Kelly, after a rough first inning, shook it off and showed why the D-Backs wanted to keep him around. He did give up a two-run single to Cedric Mullins, but then went on to retire 12 consecutive hitters before an error by Eugenio Suárez in the fifth inning. Kelly left Tuesday night’s game pitching six innings, and giving up only three runs on three hits.

After Kelly gave up a double and a suspicious walk to open up the seventh inning, head coach Torey Lovullo removed Merrill Kelly from the game, bringing in Shelby Miller. Kelly would end up getting into a heated argument with first base umpire Laz DÃaz after Tyler O’Neill’s walk, after it seemed he didn’t hold up and check his swing, in what should of resulted as strike three. DÃaz eventually ejected Kelly, and head coach Torey Lovullo wasn’t having it. Lovullo, who ran right up into the face of home plate umpire Diaz, was tossed shortly after.

Jeff Banister took over as manager, and helped the D-Backs close it out. Another close moment came in the eigth inning, as Baltimore pinch-runner Jorge Mateo stole second and third base, though was forced into a rundown, getting the tying run out on the basepath.
