Jake McCarthy has had a long run with this D-Backs ball club, and has been through the highs and the lows before. In 2022, his OPS+ was 117 and was one of the main focal points for their outfield. Then the 2023 season came and problems came to fruition, and McCarthy was sent down to Triple-A a couple times because of them. An unfortunate injury to his oblique came early in their 2023 World Series run during a batting practice session against the Milwaukee Brewers in the Wild Card Series. The injury would cause him to miss the postseason.

Jake McCarthy on his start to the season:

“I think you always want to get off to a good start. I think some of my at-bats have come up in crucial parts of the game, and I haven’t come through, and that’s always going to be frustrating for me, especially when I think I could have made a difference in the outcome of the game.”

Alek Thomas has been seeing more playing time due to Jake McCarthy’s struggles, and has produced at times for this D-Backs ball club.

Arizona manager Torey Lovullo spoke on McCarthy:

“Whether you start feeling for the ball, or just don’t have some good luck, I don’t know what’s going on there, but I know Jake is a proven hitter and he’s going to be fine. We just got to stand beside him and help him in that space where he needs our assistance, and we’ll be there for him.”
