In the first away series and road trip of the 2025 season, the D-Backs will be in New York facing off against the Yankees in a three game series starting tomorrow on Tuesday, April 1st. The Yankees have brought out their newest and latest tool, invention, or idea if you will. Behold, the torpedo bat.

These have been around, just not as utilized as much. New York experimented with using them in the 2024 season, but nothing too much came of it. Originally, it came about in 2023, when the Yankees minor league hitting coordinator developed a blueprint maximizing hitting potential. The torpedo shape helps shift the weight from towards the end of the bat, to around 6-7 inches below.

This new model and design of bats have been treating the Yankees kindly, New York tied an MLB record with 15 home runs in the first three games of their 2025 season. After research, it was found out that 9 out of the 15 home runs, came off of the new torpedo bat design.

These bats are completely legal, and are just now getting more traction. They fall within the MLB’s rules and guidelines, and it seems that players around the league are catching on and going to be giving them a try as well.

Torey Lovullo on new bat design:

“As long as it’s within the ground rules and Major League Baseball is aware of it, and they’re using a bat that has the right measurements and the right dimensions, more power to them.”
