On Saturday, at Rice Stadium, the 1-4 Rice Owls will take on the 2-3 UTSA Roadrunners in a matchup featuring two quarterbacks with deep NFL bloodlines. This game will see E.J. Warner and Owen McCown, sons of two former Arizona Cardinals quarterbacks, leading their teams.

On one sideline stands E.J. Warner, the son of Hall of Fame quarterback Kurt Warner, ready to lead the Owls’ offense. Across the field is Owen McCown, the son of Josh McCown, a former 3rd-round pick of the Cardinals in 2002, who will be taking snaps for the Roadrunners.

Back in 2005, both Josh McCown and Kurt Warner were part of the same quarterback room in Arizona. Warner, in his first season with the Cardinals, started 10 games, finishing with a 2-8 record, while McCown went 3-3 in his six starts. Warner would go on to revitalize his career in Arizona, sticking with the Cardinals until 2009 and leading the team to a Super Bowl appearance. McCown, meanwhile, moved on after the 2005 season to join the Detroit Lions in 2006. Over his lengthy 16-year NFL career, McCown suited up for nine different teams, earning a reputation as one of the league’s most reliable backup quarterbacks.

Now, their sons take center stage. E.J. Warner, born on April 13, 2003, began his college career at Temple, where he posted impressive numbers during his sophomore year, averaging over 300 yards per game and throwing for 23 touchdowns. However, this season at Rice, Warner has faced challenges, averaging just under 200 passing yards per game and tossing six interceptions

On the other hand, Owen McCown, born on July 12, 2003, is finding his footing at UTSA after transferring from Colorado. In his first full season with the Roadrunners, McCown has shown promise, averaging 210 yards per game with seven touchdowns against only two interceptions through five games.

Kickoff is set for 4 p.m. at Rice Stadium, with UTSA entering as the favorite.
