Entering Game 1 of the ALDS with the Yankees clinging to a 6-5 lead, Luke Weaver took the mound with two outs and a runner on first in the eighth inning. Weaver wasted no time, striking out Maikel Garcia to end the threat. He then dominated the ninth, fanning two more batters, including Royals star Bobby Witt Jr., to secure the victory and give the Yankees an early series lead.

Luke Weaver pitched with the Diamondbacks from 2019 until midway through 2022. In 2019, through 12 starts, he posted a 2.94 ERA, including three outings when he went at least six innings and gave up one run or fewer.

But 2020 did not treat Weaver as well. The righty, even during a shortened COVID season, ended the year with a 1-9 record. His nine losses led all National League pitchers, he also posted a 6.58 ERA, one of the worst in baseball that year.

By 2022, Weaver had transitioned to the bullpen, and later that season, he was traded to the Kansas City Royals in exchange for infielder Emmanuel Rivera, who was recently designated for assignment by Arizona.

Weaver joined the Yankees last season, and in 2024, he has emerged as a bright spot in a shaky bullpen. Over 84 innings, he has posted a 2.89 ERA, showcasing his resurgence as a reliable late-inning option

His four-out save against the Royals in Game 1 marked his first career postseason appearance, and if his performance is any indication, the Yankees will likely call on him again as they push deeper into October.
