Chase Field witnesses highest attendance since 2008

Arizona Diamondbacks Corbin Carroll (7) rounds third base to score a run against the San Diego Padres at Chase Field in Phoenix on Sept. 29, 2024.

Although the Arizona Diamondbacks’ 2024 season didn’t end as they had hoped—missing the postseason due to tiebreaker losses to the Mets and Braves—there were numerous positives to take away from their campaign.

One major highlight is the team’s steady improvement over the past four seasons. The D-backs have increased their win total year after year, starting with just 52 wins in 2021, then 74 wins in 2022, 84 wins in 2023, and now an impressive 89 wins in 2024.

Another bright spot was fan attendance. Contrary to popular belief, the Diamondbacks experienced a significant boost in 2024, welcoming an additional 380,694 fans to Chase Field compared to the previous season. As team owner Ken Kendrick noted earlier this week, this surge in attendance provides a financial boost as Arizona looks to build on its momentum during the offseason.

The Diamondbacks averaged nearly 29,000 fans per home game in 2024, a sharp increase from the 24,212 average in 2023. However, large crowds didn’t always lead to success on the field. According to data from Connor Ackerley at Arizona Diamondbacks on SI, the team posted a 4-6 record when more than 40,000 fans attended, compared to a 10-3 record when fewer than 20,000 were in the stands. This disparity can likely be attributed to the fact that bigger crowds often showed up for marquee matchups against World Series-caliber opponents like the Dodgers and Yankees, but it also underscores Arizona’s struggles in high-stakes games.

Despite these challenges, the 2024 season marked the highest attendance at Chase Field since 2008, a year when the Diamondbacks narrowly missed out on the National League West title, finishing just two games behind the Dodgers.
