With the Diamondbacks’ 2024 season in the books, narrowly missing out on a postseason berth, the focus now shifts to the offseason. Arizona’s front office has plenty of tough decisions to make over the next six months as they hope for another year of regular season success in 2025.
Thank you for reading this post, don't forget to subscribe!Several key players are now unrestricted free agents. Let’s take a closer look:
- Paul Sewald: Sewald was on a one-year, $7.35 million deal in 2024, but struggled midseason, losing his closer role after blowing three consecutive saves in June. His future in Arizona remains uncertain as the team considers bullpen adjustments.
- Christian Walker: A mainstay in Arizona, Walker is expected to sign a contract north of $50 million. The slugging first baseman hit 26 home runs this season and is likely to earn his third straight Gold Glove. Walker has been a crucial piece for the D-backs and is a key decision for the front office.
- Kevin Ginkel: A Tucson native and University of Arizona alum, Ginkel has spent all six seasons of his MLB career with the Diamondbacks. On a $1.225 million deal in 2024, Ginkel posted a 3.21 ERA with 77 strikeouts in 70 innings. Losing Ginkel would be a tough blow to the Diamondbacks’ bullpen.
- Josh Bell: Acquired at the trade deadline from the Marlins while Walker was on the injured list, Bell saw his playing time diminish once Walker returned. In 41 games with Arizona, Bell hit .279. With Walker expected to stay, Bell may be looking for a new team in 2025.
- Kevin Newman: A valuable utility player, Newman signed for under $1 million in 2024 but outperformed expectations. The University of Arizona alum batted .278 in 311 plate appearances.
In addition to their free agents, the D-backs have several players eligible for arbitration, including:
- A.J. Puk
- Geraldo Perdomo
- Jake McCarthy
- Joe Mantiply
- Kyle Nelson
- Pavin Smith
- Ryan Thompson
- Zac Gallen
Zac Gallen stands out as the most notable arbitration-eligible player. On track to become a free agent at the end of the 2025 season, Gallen will likely be a major focus for the Diamondbacks as they weigh long-term contract options for their ace.
