After having to leave three of his last four games due to his left ankle issue, the Diamondbacks have placed second baseman Ketel Marte on the 10-day injured list. Taking his place on the roster is first baseman Pavin Smith, who has been recalled from Triple-A Reno.

Marte suffered the initial injury on August 10 against the Phillies in a collision with Garrett Stubbs at second base. He left the game immediately following the play’s conclusion. He tried to play through the pain, but left two of his last three games after one at-bat, so it proved fruitless. Now he’ll have at 10 days off to rest the ankle and hopefully be ready to go by the time the Dodgers roll into Chase Field on August 30.
The Diamondbacks are now down arguably their three best position players. First baseman Christian Walker is recovering from a left oblique strain and Gabriel Moreno is still battling a left groin strain. The good news is the rest of the lineup has picked up some of the slack, keeping the offense afloat, but their defense was sorely missed in the Rays series.
Smith is in the Diamondbacks starting lineup, batting fifth and playing first base.

It marks the first time that Josh Bell, who was acquired in a deal on July 30, will get a rest day. Smith is a capable left-handed bat off the bench who can play adequate first base defense and cover right field in a pinch. That would allow the Diamondbacks to cover first base while Kevin Newman slides into an everyday role at second while Marte is on the IL. Blaze Alexander remains the other reserve infielder on the roster, with experience at second, short, and third.
