Last night the Diamondbacks optioned Pavin Smith to Triple-A Reno. He came up for a couple of days in an emergency appearance to bridge the gap until Josh Bell was ready to report to the team. Bell will try to fill the vacancy at first base for the next three weeks while Christian Walker recovers from a left oblique strain.
The other significant roster move is Humberto Castellanos joining the team. Steve Gilbert of MLB.com reported that Castellanos had a locker in the Diamondbacks clubhouse just minutes before the roster moves were announced. Since he was optioned on July 23, it has only been 10 days, which means there was going to be a pitcher going on the injured list. That pitcher ended up being Bryce Jarvis, who has a sprained right elbow. Hopefully there will be more on that from manager Torey Lovullo.
Additionally, left-hander Eduardo RodrÃguez was spotted in the locker room in Pittsburgh, signaling a potential return to action on the road trip. The Diamondbacks have announced their starters for this series against the Pirates to be Brandon Pfaadt, Jordan Montgomery, and Ryne Nelson, meaning RodrÃguez will return during the upcoming Guardians series. It will be the first time he’s thrown a pitch for them in the regular season after suffering a left lat strain on March 19.
Thyago Vieira, who was designated for assignment last week when the team acquired A.J. Puk from the Marlins, has cleared outright waivers and has accepted an assignment with Triple-A Reno. The big, hard-throwing right-hander was claimed off waivers by Arizona on June 6.
