The Dodgers’ Teoscar Hernández is the 2024 T-Mobile Home Run Derby champion, edging out the Royals’ Bobby Witt Jr. 14-13 in the final round. The field of eight players included Hernández, Witt, José Ramírez, Alec Bohm, Pete Alonso, Gunnar Henderson, Marcell Ozuna, and Adolis García.
Thank you for reading this post, don't forget to subscribe! Here are the totals from the first round of the derby:
- José Ramírez: 21
- Alec Bohm: 21
- Bobby Witt Jr.: 20
- Teoscar Hernández: 19
- Adolis García: 18
- Marcell Ozuna: 16
- Pete Alonso: 12
- Gunnar Henderson: 11
Alonso, a two-time derby champion, turned in a very dismal performance after negotiating his way onto the All-Star team after MLB could not convince the two league leaders in home runs, Aaron Judge or Shohei Ohtani, to participate. Diamondbacks fans were upset over Alonso’s inclusion over Christian Walker.
After the top four players advanced to the next round, it became a pair of head-to-head matchups. Witt and Ramírez faced off in the first match of the semifinals, with the Royals’ shortstop taking down the Guardians’ third baseman 17-12.
The next match was Hernández vs. Bohm, with both players hitting 15 homers a piece. The match went into a five-pitch swing-off, with Hernández ultimately prevailing.
Once again, there was a little bit of drama in the final round. Hernández opened the round with 14 home runs, with Witt to follow next. Witt got to 13 home runs, but the final pitch did not make it over the fence to force another swingoff, giving Hernández the ultimate victory.
The crown jewel event of the All-Star week will be played tomorrow, with the Diamondbacks’ Ketel Marte leading off for the National League. The broadcast will begin at 5:00 P.M. MST.
