Before Friday’s game against the Toronto Blue Jays, Diamondbacks manager Torey Lovullo gave an update on the status of three of his injured starters. Merrill Kelly, Eduardo Rodríguez, and Jordan Montgomery each threw a bullpen at Salt River Fields, with Alex Weiner of Arizona Sports reporting the details. All three pitchers had two up-downs, throwing 32, 30, and 40 pitches respectively.

Drey Jameson, who will not pitch in 2024, threw 22 pitches in his own bullpen as he continues to rehab from Tommy John surgery.

Kelly and Rodríguez are both recovering from shoulder strains, the former dealing with a teres major strain and the latter a lat strain. Montgomery is recovering from a right knee injury.

Lovullo told reporters on Thursday, including Alex Weiner of Arizona Sports, the Diamondbacks are hoping to have Montgomery back on the other side of the All-Star break. They won’t need to bring up a fifth starter until July 23, although the left-hander is eligible to be activated from the 15-day IL as early as July 14.

Their current rotation includes Zac Gallen, Brandon Pfaadt, Ryne Nelson, and Yilber Diaz. If Montgomery isn’t ready to be activated by the road trip, their options dwindle down to either Cristian Mena or Tommy Henry, if they choose to use a starter at all.
