“I couldn’t be more excited to join Coach Hurley and the Sun Devil program,” Howard said according to the press release. “Nobody has more passion and energy than Coach Hurley and I look forward to learning from him and continuing to grow.”
Howard played four seasons (2000-2004) of college basketball at Illinois before he started his lengthy coaching career. In 2007, his alma mater brought him back in as an assistant and coached there until 2012.
Departing from the Fighting Illini, the 43-year-old spent the 2012-13 season with SMU. He then received the opportunity to work under Bill Self at Kansas from 2013-2021, took the same job at Texas (2021-22) and Southern Illinois (2022-23) and will start next season at ASU.
In his eight years at Kansas, the Jayhawks won at least 25 games every season Howard was there besides the shortened 2020-21 season due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The Jayhawks had one Final Four and three Elite Eight appearances during Howard’s tenure.
Bringing his experience to Tempe, Howard joins the Sun Devils staff including Hurley, assistant coaches Nick Irvin and Yusuf Ali and special assistant to the head coach Greg Lansing.
“ASU Basketball has experienced great success during Coach’s [Hurley’s] tenure,” Howard said. “Combine the rich tradition of Arizona State and the energy of the 942 crew with the move to the Big 12 and the momentum is building for something special in Tempe!”
When speaking on the addition of Howard, Hurley is excited to work with him and knows how the program will benefit now that he is a part of the staff.
“We are thrilled to be able to add Coach Howard to the staff,” Hurley said. “His energy and passion are what makes him such an elite recruiter and it allows him to build strong relationships. He has already made a tremendous impact and is motivated to take Arizona State to the next level.”
