Christian Walker Powers Diamondbacks to 4-3 Win Over Dodgers

Arizona Diamondbacks’ Christian Walker (53) drops his bat after a walk against the Los Angeles Dodgers during the fifth inning at Chase Field on Monday, April 29, 2024.

It seemed only fitting that a game delayed by two hours due to bees would culminate in a walk-off home run in the 10th inning.

Originally, Jordan Montgomery was slated to start for Arizona, but due to the delay, the Diamondbacks opted for a bullpen day instead.

Brandon Hughes, who was called up from Triple-A earlier in the day, pitched the 1st inning. He struck out two batters in his first appearance in a Diamondbacks uniform.

The D-backs struck first with a Christian Walker solo shot in the 4th inning, his sixth of the season. It would be his first of two home runs on the night.

After the Dodgers took the lead with a run in each the 5th and 6th innings, Arizona tied things back up on a Gabriel Moreno base knock into right field.

Ryan Thompson, improving his season ERA of 1.42, provided the Diamondbacks with two crucial shutout innings to send the game into extras.

Although the Dodgers added a run in the top of the 10th with a sacrifice fly, it only took Christian Walker three pitches to deliver a two-run, walk-off home run to hand the Diamondbacks a 4-3 win.

Walker’s home run provided much-needed relief for a Diamondbacks offense that struggled all night with runners in scoring position, leaving the bases loaded in the 6th and runners on 2nd and 3rd in the 8th.

Overall, they outhit the Dodgers 10-5, but their 2-13 night with runners in scoring position forced the game to extras.

Ultimately securing the win with Walker’s heroics, the Diamondbacks look to clinch a series victory over Los Angeles tomorrow at 6:40 PM. Jordan Montgomery is expected to start for Arizona.
