The Phoenix Rising fall to the Monterey Bay Union. The defending champions second match was another 1 – 0 loss.

After the game, coach Danny Stone said, “The first half we were too casual. We were too careless and sloppy with the ball. We never gave ourselves a chance to establish any rhythm in the game.”

Game Play

The one goal of the night happened in the 22nd minute by Rafael Baca with an assist from Adrian Rebollar.

Monterey held consistent pressure on Phoenix throughout the match. However the Rising’s keeper, Rocco Rios Novo, was able to keep up with the onslaught of shots taken by the Union. Novo made four saves, including punching the ball to keep it away.

A criticism coach Stone had about how the Rising played was, “We made the game way too transitional and we made it very difficult for ourselves to not just have the ball but to get back on the ball and to reestablish second phase of the game.”

The second phase that coach Stone is referencing, is from the four phases of soccer:

-One: Developing an attack in the opponents defending third of the field.

-Two: Defending to win the ball from the opponent, and prepare to attack.

-Three: Building a play from the back.

-Four: Regaining possession of the ball in the attacking third of the field.
