Wrapping up Sunday with a 2-0 record, the Arizona Diamondbacks’ “B team” staged a 9th inning comeback to defeat the Seattle Mariners with a final score of 5-4.

The Mariners struck early, scoring a pair of runs in the 1st inning off 2019 1st-round pick Blake Walston. Walston walked the first two batters he faced and then allowed back-to-back singles. This led to him being taken out with just one out recorded, but he did return in the 2nd inning, where he quickly pitched a three-up, three-down inning.

On the other side, the Mariners had Logan Gilbert on the mound to start. Gilbert tossed five shutout innings, striking out seven batters.

It was not until Gilbert exited when the Diamondbacks finally broke through offensively. In the 6th, Arizona made it a 3-2 game led singles off the bats of Jake McCarthy and Elvis Andrus to start the inning.

Heading into the top of the 9th, Arizona trailed 4-2, but following a David Martin RBI base knock, Timothy Tawa drove in two more with two outs to hand the Diamondbacks their first lead of the afternoon.

Closing the door for the Diamondbacks was Dakota Chalmers, who, after walking a pair, struck out the final two batters on six pitches to end the game.

With a record of 9-13 this spring, the D-backs will next play the Oakland Athletics tomorrow at 1:10 PM.
