Discipline and Defense Are Like Oil and Water for the Arizona Cardinals

The San Francisco 49ers defeated the Arizona Cardinals, 45-29. The Cardinals were fighting an uphill battle in this game going against the San Francisco 49ers. The 49ers have the third ranked offense in the NFL. They are scoring 30.4 points per game.

This is one team that does not need errors from the defense to assist them in putting the ball in the end zone. The Cardinals provided the 49ers with a lot of the help that they do not need.

The 49ers ended their first drive with a touchdown pass from Brock Purdy to Deebo Samuel.

Samuel was wide open after a play-action fake. This may have been the easiest touchdown catch of Samuel’s career as the Cardinals lost him as he went in motion.

San Francisco deserves credit for the play-call and play-design but there is no way a skill player should be left wide open. Especially if that player is as good as Deebo Samuel.

Another example of the Cardinals defense not having discipline happened on later in the game as Purdy threw a touchdown pass to Christian McCaffrey.

This was a great job of Purdy escaping the rush. Once he escapes McCaffrey is wide open down the sideline. He is so wide open that he falls down after catching the pass, has time to get up and run into the end zone.

That is unacceptable from the Cardinals secondary. There was no need for the deep coverage to come up when Purdy went outside of the pocket. This is a total lack of discipline from the defense.

The Cardinals were not able to slow down the 49ers in any way. Christian McCaffrey had three total touchdowns and the Brock Purdy threw four touchdown passes.
