Trey McBride on the verge of breaking Cardinals history vs. 49ers

One. Catch. That is all it takes for Arizona Cardinals tight end Trey McBride to break a franchise record on Sunday against the San Francisco 49ers.

As it stands, McBride has 610 yards from 56 receptions and scored two touchdowns in his second season in the valley.

If he can just corral one pass from Arizona quarterback Kyler Murray into his arms, then McBride will set a new milestone for most receptions by a tight end in Cardinals history.

Currently, there is a three-way tie between McBride, Zach Ertz and Jackie Smith who all have 56 receptions.

Smith, a Hall of Famer, is regarded as one of the best tight ends that the Cardinals have ever had.

During the 1967 season, Smith collected 56 passes for 1205 yards which set the bar before Ertz.

In 2021, Ertz was in a trade to Arizona from the Philadelphia Eagles and would tie Smith in just 11 games.

However, the record that remains untouched is the 1205 yards that Smith received in 1967, the most by any Cards tight end ever.

Could McBride crush both this year?

Not likely unless he can average around 150 yards in the last four games of the season since Smith’s mark is 595 away.

Still, for every reception McBride collects from Sunday to the conclusion of the 2023 season against the Seattle Seahawks, he will continue to increase the bar moving forward.

This is only the second year in the NFL for Trey McBride, so there is plenty of time to surpass Smith’s magical career numbers and can turn into a franchise tight end that he has already showed glimpses of being.
