Kenny Dillingham Inspiring A Lot of Faith in Jacob Conover With Injuries At the Quarterback Spot

Saturday night was a game that head coach Kenny Dillingham wanted to flush down the toilet. What could go wrong in that game, went wrong and it went wrong all the way to a 29-0 blowout loss at home for their second consecutive loss on the season.

One of the biggest takeaways from the game on Saturday was the amount of injuries that the Sun Devils had going into the game and the amount of injuries that they had coming out of the game.

And none of the injuries hit them as hard as the quarterback position did. In the game, quarterbacks Trenton Bourguet and Drew Pyne exited and didn’t return after both suffered injuries during the game.

The Sun Devils were already without starting quarterback Jaden Rashada who Dillingham said is going to be out for 4-6 weeks. So this inserted their 4th string quarterback Jacob Conover who finished the game 6-16 with 89 yards and 2 interceptions in the loss to Fresno State.

Despite the tough numbers, Dillingham was impressed with the transfer quarterback in his first game action.

“His interceptions, one of them was he liked to have back and another one was just him forcing the ball in a game where we didn’t get anything going,” Dillingham said. “So I got a lot of faith in Jacob, if he takes the field.”

Conover is a transfer quarterback from BYU and was a four-star quarterback in the 2019 class coming out of Chandler High School. He served a mission in Asunción, Paraguay before attending BYU.

As a senior in 2018, he went 223-for-327 and 3,306 yards and 38 touchdowns and led his Chandler squad to a 65-28 rout over Perry in the State 6A title game.

We don’t know for sure if Conover will be playing this Saturday against USC as head coach Kenny Dillingham said that Pyne and Bourguet’s MRIs came out better than expected.

“We still don’t know on those two exactly where they stand,” Dillingham said. “The results were better than what they could have been. We got to see how they go out this week.”

We’ll get more information this week during practice. But it’s safe to say that in case Conover does have to play, Dillingham is more than confident that he can handle the load.
