ASU coach Kenny Dillingham held his first weekly game press conference today before his team opens the season on Thursday at home against Southern Utah.

His press conference, followed what he called one of the best practices the team had in two weeks. Starting QB Jaden Rashada really shined today.

Yesterday, he and the team were hit with disheartening news that they would be facing a self-imposed bowl ban. This led to a not-so-good practice, but today was much improved.

Some other topics discussed include:

  • Quarterback rotation
  • Would be ok if seniors want to redshirt this season
  • Ray Anderson getting short end of stick for bowl ban, but always stuck by his side since he’s been here

  • On the first game: “This isn’t about me. It’s about the players. It’s always about the players. Everything I’ll ever do is about the players.”
  • Jaden Rashada’s “drastic growth”
  • Coaching from the sidelines and excited to see how loud stadium will get
  • Looking forward to seeing the confidence that Rashada displays in the first game
  • WR Elijhah Badger and LB Will Shaffer will miss the first half of Thursday’s game due to personal fouls incurred in last year’s Territorial Cup

  • On Rashada’s rapid growth: “I think he turned every day that he failed into growth and every day that he succeeded into growth.”
  • Says Rashada is leading through his work, and everybody recognizes this. He’s slowly getting more comfortable
  • Today was “probably the best practice we’ve had in the last two weeks … phenomenal day just tells the character of the people that we have”
  • Want to play five to eight players on the offensive line. Wrote about this in my predicted rotation (click here)
  • Wants ASU fans to come out and recognize “the adversity is behind us” from yesterday’s bowl ban. Has told his team he gave them one day to process it and now it’s time to move on. Wants fans to do the same thing
  • Proud of the leaders on the team of making today’s practice one of the best yet. “They’re not going to let anything derail them from what they actually want, and that’s just to show people that they put in the work.”
  • “I think all the trials that we’re facing is good for the longevity of the football team, and we’re going to spin everything as a positive and we’re gonna be the best we can be.”

ASU coach, players express strong displeasure with team’s self-imposed bowl ban
