Gabriel Moreno has been the Diamondbacks primary catcher this season, the 23-year-old has played in 73 games so far. During this time, Moreno has posted a .273 batting average and has driven in 28 runs at the plate.

On the defensive end, Moreno is well known for his strong arm behind the plate. Moreno ranks third in the MLB with 17 runners thrown out stealing and leads the league with a 1.8 DWAR.

While the Diamondbacks do have Carson Kelly, who returned from an injury at the beginning of June, Kelly has not been the most reliable player on the offensive side.

Since his return, the 29-year-old is 10/57 at the plate and has an SLG% of just .246.

Because of this, the Diamondbacks have called up Jose Herrera from Triple-A Reno. Herrera was the D-backs primary backup catcher before Kelly was brought back from the IL.

During Herrera’s time in the lineup, he posted a .255 batting average in 55 at bats.

The Diamondbacks will wrap up their three-game series against the Reds on Sunday. It will be a designated bullpen game for Arizona, as starting pitchers Merrill Kelly and Zach Davies remain on the IL.
