Lourdes Gurriel Jr. and Zac Gallen were the two players from the D-backs to be named reserves today. They joined Corbin Carroll, who was named a starter last week. All three will be first time All-Stars.

See the full roster below:

Marte, Walker, Perdomo and Kelly each had strong cases for joining the three players in the All-Star game, but ultimately weren’t selected.

Ketel Marte

Marte had the best case for making thee All-Star game, as he near the top of every category for NL second basemen. The Braves’ Ozzie Albies was selected as a reserve after the Marlins’ Luis Arraez was named the starting second baseman. Many are not happy that Albies made it over Marte.

Marte entered today’s game against the Angels with a .285 batting average and .365 OBP, which were second among all NL second basemen, and he had a .502 SLG and .867 OPS, both of which ranked first among all NL second basemen.  Entering this afternoon, had reached base in 54 of 55 games and is currently working on a 24-game on-base streak after his 30-game streak was snapped.

Marte’s 2023 stats entering today: 79 G, .285 AVG, 15 HR, 13 2B, 44 RBI, 61 R, 6 SB, .365 OBP, .867 OPS

Christian Walker

Walker had arguably the best month of his career in June, as he bolstered his season batting average to .269 and tied his total number of doubles last season with 25 after hitting 15 in June. He had a 13-game hitting streak snapped on Friday. For the month, he batted an incredible .347, had an OBP of .412, SLG of .614 and OPS of 1.026, all while being arguably the best fielder among first basemen in the entire MLB.

He somehow lost out to Pete Alonso, who was named a reserve after Freddie Freeman got the starting vote and is only hitting .217 this year, but does have 24 home runs and 55 RBIs.

Walker’s 2023 stats entering today: 81 G, .269 AVG, 16 HR, 25 2B, 54 RBIs., 44 R, .334 OBP, .506 SLG, .840 OPS

Geraldo Perdomo

The Diamondbacks’ recent lead-off hitter was left off the NL roster despite having his best season yet. The Braves’ Orlando Arcia was named the starter at shortstop for the NL, while Dansby Swanson (CHC) was named as a reserve today.

Perdomo’s 2023 stats: 69 G, .284 AVG, 5 HR, 14 2B, 33 RBIs, 37 R, .389 OBP, .433 SLG, .822 OPS

Merrill Kelly

The D-backs’ No. 2 pitcher is currently on the IL, but was having a breakout season before being placed on the list last week with career-highs in averages across the board. After starting the season 1-3, Kelly had posted eight wins in a row to improve to 9-3 before losing his most recent start.

The NL starting pitchers that made it over Kelly were: Zac Gallen (AZ), Spencer Strider (ATL), Bryce Elder (ATL), Justin Steele (CHC), Mitch Keller (PIT), Josiah Gray (WSH), Clayton Kershaw (LAD) and Marcus Stroman (CHC).

Kelly’s 2023 stats: 16 GS, 9-4 W-L, 3.22 ERA, .210 AVG, 1.14 WHIP

Lourdes Gurriel Jr. is officially an All-Star
