After taking back-to-back games against the Dodgers in their home series opener, Arizona is off to a 5-4 start and sits atop a talented NL West.

On Saturday, it was the offense that led the charge as the Diamondbacks’ sluggers produced 12 runs. For reference, the last time the D-backs put up 12 runs or more against the Dodgers dates all the way back to April 17th, 2017. The two teams have faced off a grand total of 96 times since then.

But not only are the Diamondbacks off to a great start, but they are also doing it against two of the best teams in baseball. All nine games so far this season have consisted of either the Padres or the Dodgers. It was a dreaded start to the year, and so far, they have passed the test.

While there have been multiple bright spots on the offense, it has been shortstop Geraldo Perdomo leading the charge. Perdomo is coming off a less than ideal 2022 season where he finished with a .195 batting average through 500 plate appearances.

However, through nine games, 2023 has been a completely different story for the 23-year-old. Perdomo leads the D-backs’ offense in just about every category by driving in seven runs in the six games in which he has made an appearance. Arizona is now 4-2 in games where Perdomo gets the start.

The big question now is: Will Perdomo be able to keep up this impressive offensive performance?

Perdomo is currently fighting for a consistent starting spot with Diamondbacks veteran Nick Ahmed. The 33-year-old has played all ten seasons of his career in Arizona and is also not off to a bad start this year. Ahmed holds a .313 batting average on five hits in 16 plate appearances.

Of course, it is never a bad thing to have two talented players exceed expectations while sharing playing time. But this continuous stream of hits from the two has created a tough decision for manager Torey Lovullo.

Perdomo’s two-run bomb against the Dodgers on Friday helped the D-backs cut within a four-run lead, ultimately sparking a roaring offense on Saturday.

The D-backs will now have the opportunity to take three of four against the Dodgers as they wrap up the series on Sunday at 1:10 PM.
