Cunningham played fantastic last season; she averaged a career-high 12.6 points and 4.4 rebounds per game. In addition, the guard shot 40% from three-point land last season. As a result, Cunningham was a big reason the Mercury made the playoffs.
The Mercury finished 15-21 last year in head coach Vanessa Nygaard‘s first year. Phoenix was bounced out of the first round of the playoffs by WNBA champion Las Vegas Aces. The Mercy still has a lot of work to do with their roster. After signing Cunningham, they have only four players on their roster, Skylar Diggins-Smith, Brianna Turner, and Diamond DeShields.
Cunningham is a good three-point shooter, plays with an edge, and is good at getting under opposing players’ skin. This was a good signing for the Mercury.
