The eighth inning started with the Cubs calling for Jordan Wicks to come in as a relief pitcher. Head coach Torey Lovullo went with the matchups and had Randal Grichuk pinch-hit for Pavin Smith. Grichuk hit a single to left field starting off the rally, Josh Naylor followed suit and hit a single right after, and Lourdes Gurriel Jr. got one of his own getting the bases loaded with no outs for Eugenio Suárez. Suárez then cleared the bases with a grand slam bringing the Cubs’ lead to 7-5.

After a Gabriel Moreno ground out, Jake McCarthy drew a walk, and Alek Thomas (who pinch-hit for Garrett Hampson) also had a single. Corbin Carroll struck out for the second out of the inning, but then Geraldo Perdomo hit an infield single scoring McCarthy and bringing the score to 7-6

Grichuk found himself back up at the plate and hit a bouncing ball down the line that skipped right by third baseman Gage Workman and rolled into left field. The Snakes took the 8-7 lead when Ian Happ tried to make a play at the plate, though his throw was off the mark, letting Perdomo and Thomas score on the error.

The Snakes weren’t done there as after a Josh Naylor walk, Lourdes Gurriel Jr. smashed a three-run home run making the score 11-7, showing that the “answerbacks”, are for real.

The Chicago Cubs had a stellar 8th inning of their own though, after Carson Kelly, Kyle Tucker, and Seiya Suzuki hit three home runs bringing the score back up to 13-11, which ultimately the D-Backs couldn’t come back from. The two ball clubs combined for a total of 16 runs in what could have been one of the most electrifying innings of the entire season.
