GLENDALE – For most NFL players, custom cleats are an opportunity to express personality, pay tribute, or represent a cause. For Arizona Cardinals captain Mack Wilson Sr., his Week 1 footwear against the Los Angeles Chargers did something a little more interesting, as it connected the Valley’s football and basketball cultures.

Mack Wilson Sr. wore custom Book 1 Nike cleats inspired by Devin Booker, the face of the Phoenix Suns and arguably one of the most recognizable athletes so far in Arizona sports. That distinction makes the choice stand out. Booker’s signature sneakers have become part of his identity, while his collaborations and connection to Phoenix have made the “Book” brand familiar well beyond basketball circles. Seeing that influence show up on an NFL captain creates a different kind of local sports moment.

This was not simply a player wearing stylish cleats. It was a Cards representative embracing a figure deeply associated with the Suns, giving fans of both teams a shared point of connection before Arizona’s season had even developed its own storylines. That crossover matters in a market where fans often support multiple teams, but rarely see those identities directly intersect on the field. Wilson’s cleats made the connection visible.

The bigger takeaway is that Arizona sports culture does not operate in separate lanes. Booker’s influence reaches beyond Footprint Center, and Wilson’s footwear showed how a Suns icon can become part of Arizona’s visual identity, even for one afternoon. Sometimes the coolest sports collaborations are the ones nobody had to announce.
